TL;DR Summary: Both open and enclosed trailers are suitable for landscaping companies depending on their hauling needs. This post answers frequently asked questions by landscape companies searching for trailers, and features a custom landscape trailer that offers a unique fusion of enclosed and open trailer features perfect for the landscaping company who ordered it.

Meeting the diverse needs of modern landscaping companies requires innovation and customization. At Norco Trailers, we recently had the pleasure of designing a one-of-a-kind hybrid trailer for a prominent landscape company, seamlessly blending the features of an enclosed box trailer and an open landscape trailer. This custom trailer not only addresses the specific requirements of the company but also might just set a new standard in trailer design for the landscaping industry.

Choosing the right trailer for your landscape business involves considering the types of equipment you use, the need for security and protection, and your budget. By understanding the benefits of both open and enclosed trailers, you can select a trailer that enhances your business’s efficiency and productivity.

Landscaping Customer Background

Landscape Development Inc, a leading name in landscaping services, has been a valued customer of Norco Trailers for the last year purchasing many trailers as their needs as their demand increased. They previously purchased both fully enclosed cargo trailers and open equipment trailers from us, which served them well for various projects. However, as their range of services, equipment, and teams expanded, they encountered challenges that required a more versatile solution.

After their initial enclosed and open trailer purchases they decided to order a slightly custom landscape utility trailer with an expanded metal box and steel floor (to hold up longer with their rougher machines).

Once that custom order was a success for their company, and after speaking with our Playcraft Trailer factory, we opted to add a few additional features to their successful design that are universally useful for nearly every landscape company.

This custom landscape trailer is now a favorite our Norco Trailers stores decided to stock it in our usual inventory with its full-width expanded metal box, tool holders, weed-eater racks, and reinforced expanded metal amp gate that won’t sag over-time with frequent loading and unloading equipment.

You can view the open utility and landscape utility trailers in stock at both of our stores if your company cannot wait for a unique custom trailer to be built to meet your needs.

The Design Process

After surveying employees that use the trailers and evaluating the upcoming projects on their schedule this landscape compnay decided they needed a trailer that could provide the protective benefits of an enclosed box for sensitive equipment while offering the accessibility of an open trailer for bulkier items. Understanding the unique requirements of the landscape company, we embarked on a collaborative design process. This involved detailed consultations and brainstorming sessions to ensure that every aspect of their needs was addressed. Our team worked closely with the company’s representatives to incorporate their specific requests into the design.

The result was an 83″ x 14′ custom trailer that features a unique combination of an enclosed section for tools and equipment and an open section for larger, bulkier items. This hybrid design was meticulously crafted to provide the best of both worlds, ensuring durability, versatility, and ease of use.

We used a 14′ landscape trailer as the base of this trailer build then had the factory build a full-width by 4′ long box with a generous 6.5′ tall inside height.

The trailer includes a secure, enclosed section for storing tools and sensitive equipment, protecting them from the elements and potential theft. Adding a rugged puck lock to the bar lock doors provides the necessary security for often stolen tools typically left unsecured in traditional open landscape trailers.

The open landscape section of the trailer is perfect for transporting larger items such as mulch, plants, and machinery. This area offers easy access and ample space, and a reinforced rear ramp making loading and unloading a breeze.

Built with high-quality materials, this hybrid trailer is designed to withstand the rigorous demands of landscaping work. The open section, as well as the enclosed, are equipped with a rugged steel floor that ensures long-lasting performance, even in challenging conditions.

The brand Playcraft Trailers also offers a “lifetime guarantee on welds” making it an excellent choice when it comes to selecting a well-built trailer with a guarantee that ensures it will outlast its owner’s hauling needs.

Benefits and Impact

Since integrating the custom hybrid trailer into their fleet, the landscape company has reported significant improvements in their operational efficiency. The versatility of the trailer allows for seamless transitions between different job sites, ultimately enhancing productivity.

The enclosed section keeps their tools and equipment safe and organized, reducing downtime caused by misplaced, damaged, or stolen items. The open section, on the other hand, makes it easy to transport bulkier materials, streamlining the entire process.
